Whitney Houston and Dana Bash

Whitney Elizabeth Houston, born 9 August 1963 into a musically inclined family in Newark New Jersey is the daughter of gospel star Cissy Houston and John Russell Houston Jr. She's also the cousin of singer Dionne Warwick. She began singing in a choir at her church The New Hope Baptist Church in Newark in the early years of her childhood and at fifteen, she was singing back vocals professionally with their mother in Chaka Khan's 1978 smash Im Every Woman. Later, she provided background vocals for Jermaine Jackson and Lou Rawls as well as her mom. She began working as a lead vocalist with the New York-based funk band Material and it was the high quality of her singing with them that attracted the attention of the major record labels, including Arista with whom she signed in 1983 and where she was for the rest of her professional career. The 1992 film The Bodyguard sealed her spot as one of the most successful musicians of all-time. Although the film and the actor's performance weren't highly praised, the soundtrack album that featured her interpretation of Dolly Parton's I Will Always Love You was the top-selling album and single for a number of months. It sold over 44 million copies across the globe. Also in 1993 that she married Bobby Brown, an ex-New Edition artist and father of the sole child of her marriage, Bobbi Kristina Brown. At this point her use of drugs was well-documented and she began using daily until 1996.
